The Catholic Parish of Ballyroan was constituted from Rathfarnham Parish. The Parish Church was dedicated to the Holy Spirit and was blessed and opened by the then Archbishop of Dublin, Dr McQuaid, on Sunday 3rd December 1967.

There are approximately 2,000 families in the Parish. Parts of the original Parish of Ballyroan – Glendoher, Scholarstown, Boden Park, etc. – were included in the new Parishes of Ballyboden (1973) and Knocklyon (1974).

CONFIRMATION

Each year the Sacrament of Confirmation is administered to the pupils of the sixth classes of the Parish Primary Schools. The young people are encouraged to participate in a Faith Friends Programme.

Confirmation will be celebrated on Friday 1st April 2011.

THE FAITH FRIENDS PROGRAMME
This is designed to enable those preparing for Confirmation to experience the local Church as a Community of Faith Friends. The programme is based on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The Faith Friends are selected from Sancta Maria and Colaiste Eanna and given the necessary training by the school Chaplains.

MARRIAGE
The Christian vision of Marriage is a lifelong commitment of a couple to each other. Preparation for Marriage is essential and a Pre-Marriage Course is recommended as part of this preparation.

All couples must give at least three months notice of their marriage to one of the Priests of the Parish. If either party is under 21 years of age, the written consent of his or her parents is required and further, if either of the couple is under 18 years of age, nine months notice is required.
Three months notice is also required to be given to the Civil Registrar of Marriages.

Couples must complete a Pre-Nuptial Enquiry Form with a Priest. They will also require a new Baptismal Certificate, a Confirmation Certificate and Proof of Freedom.

FUNERALS
Funeral arrangements are made by the relatives of the deceased person together with the Priest and funeral undertaker.
The introduction to the Funeral Rites states that the Ministry of consolation belongs to the whole Christian Community. It is in this context that the Parish Funeral Team, which was established in Ballyroan Parish in 2006, provides a practical expression of the ministry. Members of the team assist the clergy and the bereaved in the preparation of the funeral rites. For details on the Bethany Bereavement Group click here.

THE PARISH FINANCES
As for any institution, finances are an important factor in the life of our Parish. The following are the main sources of income:

The Family Offering
This is the principle source of income. Contributions can be made by bankers order (forms available in the Parish Office) or by using the Family Offering Envelope. The proceeds finance Church maintenance and other parish costs and expenses.

Collections during Mass
There are two collections at each Mass every Sunday and Holy Day. The first collection (along with the Christmas and Easter dues) provides a salary for the Priests of the Parish as well as priests in less well-off parishes and those who are sick or retired. The second collection is for SHARE.

Proceeds from shrines
The proceeds from the Shrines go to supplement the cost of Church maintenance.

THE SISTERS OF MERCY
The Order was founded by Catherine McAuley for the relief of the sick and the education and protection of the poor. St. Mary’s, the convent here in Ballyroan, was made possible by the gift of the property to the Order by the McCabe sisters in 1932. The convent has served the people in many ways down through the years. In the early days it was used as a holiday home, then to take care of children whose mothers were suffering from T.B. In 1960 St. Mary’s entered on the third phase, namely, primary and secondary education.

True to the charisma of their foundress, the Sisters of Mercy in Ballyroan established two very fine schools, Sancta Maria College and Scoil Naomh Padraig. The Sisters moved from the Convent in 1988 and at present there is a Mercy Community on Butterfield Avenue and two communities in Knocklyon Parish.
