Ballyroan Parish Celebration of 40th Jubilee

In 2007 the Parish of Ballyroan celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the church. The Parish of Ballyroan was constituted from the ancient parish of Rathfarnham and the parish church was dedicated to the Holy Spirit as The Church of the Holy Spirit.

The first sod was turned on the site on 10th October 1964 by Canon O’Donnell P.P. Rathfarnham who invoked the guidance of the Holy Spirit to whom the church was dedicated. The building costs including furnishings, but excluding site cost and seating, was contracted out at £125,000.

The new church was solemnly blessed and opened by the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Reverend Dr. McQuaid on the first Sunday of Advent, 3rd December 1967.

The church’s architect was Mr Raymond McDonnell,B.Arch.,M.I.SA.I. and the builder was Laurence Murray & Sons. Today it is a Listed Building but with a modern constructional expression. The modern crucifix behind the High Altar was created by Imogen Stuart. The stained glass windows that incorporate the Stations of the Cross lifesize were designed by John Murphy.

Internally, there are two wonderful murals by Sean Keating and externally a bronze symbol of the Holy Spirit surmounts the main entrance doors, which are sheeted in bronze.
